How to Spot a Fake Online Pharmacy in the UK
A guide to keeping yourself safe when buying Mounjaro, Wegovy, and other prescription medications online.
The appeal of online pharmacies — and why it pays to be careful
It's easy to see why online pharmacies have taken off. They're convenient, often cheaper than the high street, and you can sort everything from your sofa without having to book a GP appointment or have an awkward conversation at the counter. For treatments like Mounjaro and Wegovy, where monthly costs add up quickly, finding a good price online is naturally tempting.
But not every website selling medication is what it claims to be. The rise in demand for GLP-1 weight loss treatments has attracted its fair share of dodgy operators — sites that look professional enough on the surface but aren't actually regulated, don't carry out proper checks, and in some cases aren't even selling genuine medication. Knowing what to look out for can save you a lot more than money.
A quick note: We're not a regulator and we can't replace the role of the GPhC or MHRA. We'd always encourage you to verify any pharmacy yourself through the GPhC register before placing an order.
What's the worst that can happen?
It might sound dramatic, but buying from an unregulated pharmacy is a genuine health risk. Counterfeit or unregulated medications — particularly injectable treatments like Mounjaro and Wegovy — can cause real harm.
Risk | What it means |
|---|---|
Harmful ingredients | Counterfeit pens may contain completely different substances to what's on the label, some of which could be dangerous. |
No active ingredient | Some fake medications contain nothing useful whatsoever — you're paying for something that simply won't work. |
Wrong dosages | Even if the active ingredient is present, the concentration might be off, increasing the risk of side effects or making the treatment ineffective. |
Poor manufacturing | Unregulated suppliers often source from manufacturers with no quality controls, no cold chain handling, and no accountability. |
Risk of misuse | Obtaining prescription medication without proper clinical oversight opens the door to misuse, particularly with treatments that need careful dose escalation. |
Weight loss medications and treatments for conditions like erectile dysfunction are among the most commonly counterfeited — largely because people sometimes feel uncomfortable discussing them face to face, which pushes them towards less reputable online sources.
Red flags to watch out for
Not every fraudulent pharmacy is obvious. Some look slick and professional. But there are warning signs that should make you think twice — or walk away entirely.
Major warning signs
No consultation or prescription process — If a site lets you buy Mounjaro or Wegovy without answering any medical questions or speaking to a prescriber, that's a major concern. These are prescription-only medications for a reason.
Prices that seem too good to be true — We're all for a bargain, but if a pharmacy is significantly undercutting every other provider, ask yourself how. Genuine GLP-1 medications cost what they cost at wholesale level, so massive discounts should raise questions.
No visible regulatory details — A legitimate UK pharmacy will display its GPhC registration number clearly on its website. If you can't find one, don't buy from them.
Bulk buy offers — Being encouraged to stockpile prescription medication at a discount isn't normal practice and suggests a provider that isn't following proper prescribing guidelines.
No contact details — If there's no physical address, phone number, or proper customer service channel, that's a red flag. Legitimate pharmacies are happy for you to get in touch.
Prices not listed in GBP — A UK-registered pharmacy will price in pounds sterling. If you're seeing dollars or euros, you're likely not dealing with a UK-regulated provider.
Spam emails or social media ads with wild claims — Unsolicited messages promising miracle results, rock-bottom prices, or overnight transformations are almost always scams.
Additional things to check
Worldwide shipping promises — Most legitimate UK pharmacies only ship within the UK. Claims about international delivery or customs charges should make you cautious. A small number do hold export licences, but they're the exception rather than the rule.
No medical screening — A proper pharmacy mirrors what your GP would do. If nobody's asking about your medical history, current medications, or health conditions before dispensing a GLP-1 treatment, something's not right.
No information about the medication — Trustworthy providers give you clear details about dosage, side effects, storage, and how to use the treatment. If a site just lets you add to basket with no supporting information, steer clear.
The simple rule: If it seems too good to be true, it almost certainly is. A suspiciously cheap deal or a promise that sounds too easy isn't worth the risk to your health. At best, you'll waste your money on something that does nothing. At worst, you could end up seriously unwell.
Who regulates online pharmacies in the UK?
There are three main bodies worth knowing about:
Regulator | What they do |
|---|---|
Maintains a public register of accredited pharmacies and pharmacy professionals in the UK. You can search their register online to verify whether a pharmacy is legitimate. Every pharmacy listed on our site is GPhC registered. | |
Oversees the safety and regulation of medicines in the UK, and works to identify and shut down illegitimate suppliers. | |
Assesses and inspects healthcare providers, including some online pharmacy services, to ensure they meet required standards. |
Even with these bodies in place, the MHRA has acknowledged that the sheer volume of rogue online pharmacies makes it impossible to catch them all. That's why doing your own checks matters.
Look after yourself
Buying Mounjaro or Wegovy online can be perfectly safe — as long as you're buying from the right place. Take a minute to check the GPhC register, look for the warning signs above, and don't let a low price override your common sense. Your health is worth more than saving a few quid.
Every pharmacy listed on our site has been verified and links directly to both the pharmacy and their GPhC registration, so you can always double-check for yourself.
